Sophie The African Grey

(Pictures from the summer of 1995)

This is Sophie, a "baby" Congo African Grey Parrot. You can tell that she is still a baby by the hand feeding formula on her face and by her soft brown eyes.

This page will be updated from time to time with pictures of Sophie, and of Aerial (our #1 bird, a gentle, loving cockatiel) as they are available.

An ad appeard in a newspaper advertising an "African Grape Parrot". We assumed it was a misprint, but soon adopted the phrase as one of our favorite nicknames for Sophie. As you can see, she is fond of grapes.

Sophie's parents came from Cameroon, but Sophie is a native Texan. She was hatched on May 9, 1995 near Shiner, Texas in a house with 6 other African greys, a macaw, a cockatoo, a cockatiel, four dogs, four humans, and one cat. She was one of a clutch of three, all of whom have homes in Texas.

The African grey parrot is probably the most intelligent of the parrots. They can learn to imitate human speech very well, and can learn to use human language appropriately. Irene Pepperberg had done some rather remarkable work at the University of Arizona with talking birds. A visit to her home page is a must for anyone interested in parrots.

Sophie is helping Cheryl wash dishes and hang out the laundry!

Other bird pages

Up At Six Aviaries maintains a nice home page with many bird resources and links to other sites.

TheUAS links page is about as complete a listing of bird sites on the World Wide Web as I've seen.
